US stocks mixed on the day, but positive on the week

FXStreet (San Francisco) - US stocks market closed mixed on Friday but posted its first weekly gain in the year. Investors traded in profit-taking mode after Thursday's post-ECB rally.

The Dow and the S&P closed at lows of the day, while the Nasdaq posted gains fueled by technology shares advance.

The DJIA declined 0.79% to 17,672.60; but the Dow posted 0.94% gains over the week. The S&P 500 fell 0.55% to 2,051.82 in the week, but closed +1.63% in the week. The Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.16%, with an impressive 2.68% jump in the week, to close at 4,757.88.

By sectors, most sectors finished Friday down for the day. Wrost performers were Material (-2.14%), Financials (-0.75%) and Industrials (-0.66%); while Technology (+1.07%) and Utilities (+0.01%) were the two only sectors that posted gains on Friday.

Major gainers in the day were Starbucks $SBUX (+6.62%), Google $GOOG (+1.04%), and Apple $AAPL (+0.52%). Top losers were UPS $UPS (-9.91%), BHP Billiton (-3.83%), and Exxon Mobil (-2.13%).

The cloud-storage BOX Inc $BOX debuted in the NYSE with a gain of 65.93$ to $23.23 from its IPO price of $14.00.
